Not like sleeping on his back

My infant does not like sleeping on his back at all. He will cry for hours because it is so uncomfortable for him. He finally cries himself to sleep. Now that he can roll on his side I put him down on his back, then go to check on him 10 minutes later he is sound asleep on his side. Is this safe? I hear about the 'back to sleep' program all the time, so this is making me worry.

I always put my babies to sleep on their side but with support so they can't turn onto their stomach. How old is your baby? There is going to be a time when your baby will be turning every which way and you won't be able to be there at all times to prevent it. This rule of the baby on its back is mainly for infants whose neck are not strong enough in case they vomit and can't move their necks and change positions.

Oh I didn't know that part. He is 5 months old now and hold his head up really well. He can move a little and stay sitting up for a couple minutes by himself. Thanks I guess I need not worry so much.

The whole sleeping on the back thing has all parents worried, it is good you asked. I believe the same is true for the bumpers for the crib. You are not suppose to put them in until your baby can hold the neck up and be able to push away if he/she gets their face up against it.

Yes I would just use the pillow thing that keeps the baby from rolling over on his belly. I'm not sure what it's called. I don't think it is a problem for infants to sleep on their side. If he is more comfortable that way I would say it's ok.

I haven't heard of any problems with a baby sleeping on its side. i would say if he's more comfortable that way, then let him. but if you're truly worried about it, call your pediatrician.
