    Urinating In Bed

How do you train a child not to urinate in bed? My parents taught me to urinate before sleeping so I won't urinate in bed. The diapers have to come off someday so teaching them not to urinate in bed as early as possible is a big help.

Well, my daughter is 7 and she still uses a pull up at night. She knows she just can't make herself awake and I usually wake up after the fact. I figure sooner or later she will learn. I try not to traumatize her and I am not up to washing sheets every day.

This is a difficult area to draw the line. Sometimes it takes longer for some children's bodies to mature to the place where they can keep from wetting the bed. Other times they are very sound sleepers and in reality do not wake up, but then there are children who are lazy and simply don't want to get up. It's hard to know exactly how to handle children who wet the bed.

With my son I made him go before bed and woke him up about 11 when I was going to bed, then my spouse would wake him before going to work at 5 am. Then I would get him up about 7. Now he wakes himself up once a night and goes. He is 4 and only has about 1 accident a week.

I was lucky. I think my girl has a huge bladder. She just holds it. I of course make sure she gets to the bathroom before going to bed, but she doesn't wake up in the middle of the night unless she is sick. She hasn't even had an accident.

Yes, this is the perfect way. I also do the same with my kids.

I know two little girls for whom those little alarms that go in their pull-ups at night worked within a week. They were both 6 or 7 when their parents used them. It worked brilliantly. The alarm goes off at the first hint of moisture and taught them to notice their body cues even in sleep. And it didn't seem a matter of bladder size although I have often read that is the case especially with boys.

If bladder size is the problem, I read about training to get their bladders bigger by having them hold it in just a little longer each time (this is during the day).
