What is the right amount of sleep needed?

What is the right amount of sleep needed for a healthy adult? Is this mandatory? I have researched this on the Internet and most sites seem to suggest 7-8 hours. I sleep whenever I feel the need and as much or as little as I want to without any regard to the number of hours. I am perfectly healthy. Should I change anything?

I heard about this as well. The health teachers I had when I still in school also taught us to sleep for at least 8 hours. Now I only sleep around 4 to 5 hours every night and I still feel normal.

A healthy adult normally sleep around 4-6 hours a day. It's perfectly fine, if you sleep longer than that your body would feel tired. It is not good to oversleep too. So it's best that you keep your sleep duration around that figures.

Well, I guess I should keep on sleeping just like I do at the moment. Well, at least as long as I am not feeling tired, cranky or stuff like that. Well, I tried many a time to stick to 8 hours a night, but I just couldn't.

The amount of sleep we need varies from person to person. The truth is in order to reduce amount of sleep needed, you have to understand how the sleep process works. Some people think that Most teens need about 8½ to more than 9 hours of sleep each night. but I would to say that six hours is the minimum you could get without compromising your brain so much that it works against you

This differs to each person. There are some who needed at least 8 hours of sleep while others need only about 5 hours. I normally get sleep between 6 to 8 hours of sleep and I feel rested with that duration. Lesser than that then I would be groggy in the morning.

According to me 8 hours sleep is really good for health. Sleeping is most important in our life because It boost our energy and enough sleep gives us refreshment. During sleeping disturbance is also not good for health.

Sleeping is very important for providing relaxation to the body. According me 6-7 hour sleep is necessary and is very good for the health. I myself used to sleep for 6 hour daily . A complete silent atmosphere is needed while sleeping.

    Help

I cant get proper sleep which keeps me lazy all day long. A quote which i found at Quote Ocean illustrates the value of sleep:
"There is more refreshment and stimulation in a nap, even of the briefest, than in all the alcohol ever distilled."
Please do let me know how much sleep is essential.

If you are perfectly healthy and functioning fine with no cognitive problems, and able to live a fulfilling life, then personally, I would count my blessings and not change a thing!

I know a mother and daughter that have the rare genetics of needing EXTREMELY little sleep. 2 hours per night is all. It is like they get to live an entire life extra, imo. Some years back I read some research about people with their genes. Lucky them. So for THEM, 7-8 hours per night is ridiculous - as ridiculous as 2 hours sleep per night would be for most others. But it is NORMAL for THEM.

For some years I NEEDED 9-10 hours of sleep per night. I thought I was "healthy" but a medication I was taking for inflammation apparently made me need extra sleep. Trying to go by the "rule" of 7-8 hours was DETRIMENTAL to me during that time.

Another time it was detrimental is when I was allergic. If I did not sleep more I kept getting horribly sick with infection & high fever. I was better off just sleeping more when I needed it.

And other times during my life I slept 6-7 hours for years, and was fine.

The 7-8 is an average. And we are not always "averagely" (new term -lol) healthy.

If you sleep the SAME amount on weekends as during the week, and the SAME amount regardless of when you go to bed, AND this is without drugs of any kind, including caffeine, AND you are not drowsy during the day, THEN you can know THIS is YOUR "normal" for this stage in your life.
