Seeing sound while drifting off to sleep

I just wanted to know if this is so rare as it seems....???? or if it happens to others...?

Only while falling asleep, sharp noises are felt as jabs to the body and brain, sure... but also seen as bright white lights - some with a blue tinge - like suddenly lifting eyelids open and shining intense light directly into the eyes. So.. the sounds are SEEN as light, as well as heard.

But only during that one phase of drifting off to sleep when the person is desperate to not wake all the way back up.

Any comments? Do others experience this?

    GregoryD,

Thank you. That's interesting. I never thought of it possibly falling under the category of a "hypnagogic hallucination." I did think of the term "synesthesia" but strangely happening only at that borderline state of falling asleep. You sure do have many interesting articles on your site. I notice there are many schizophrenia-related advertisements. You might be interested in reading the sleep-related information on http://www.ItsNotMental.com (doesn't have such ads) - but you can see how easily sleep disorders (including narcolepsy) can be mistaken for bipolar and schizophrenia.

Hi Naomi I tried to go to the website you gave but it gave a page not found error.

Otherwise, concerning your comment on synesthesia, I don't think it applies to your original description because synesthesia can be experienced almost every minute during the day (for example in the famous BBC documentary the lady could see colours absolutely all the time 24/7)

Oops. I left out the .com, so I fixed that.

I agree. The term came to mind because it was seeing sound, but unlike synesthesia only occurred at the border of sleep. So your label of hypnagogic hallucination fits well. I appreciate you proffering that as an explanation because it had not occurred to me.
