what is going on. the WIERDEST thing ive ever seen.

Okay so this is the weirdest thing I've ever seen anybody do in their sleep. To say that my boyfriend is a restless sleeper would be an understatement. While he is sleeping, periodically through the night, he will be laying on his stomach and both of his feet and head slam up and down onto the matress repeatedly and at the same time. His middle and arms stay still while his head and feet lift upwards and then slam and I mean slam back down. And while this is all happening he is making a repeating groaning sound. He is totally asleep while its happening and he has done it since he was little. Other family members have had this issue when they were young but they grew out of it. Pleaseee anyone with any information on this please repost. I have a hard time getting through the night with him and his back is in constant pain. Even knowing what the heck is going on would be miles ahead of where we are now.

    hi babyD,
from what you described it can not be a bad dream because it is not only repetative but also other family members you said suffer from it.
Then the only thing left that I can think of is seizures, i.e. he might be having seizures in his sleep.

Just for curiousity sake does it happen in any other sleeping position other than on his stomach?
Also, did you notice if it happens after some activity or event, like does it happen after drinking alcohol or after he is stressed or basically is there any event that you could connect to it happening?

Finally what you want to do is gather as much information as possible like the questions I asked above and also, if possible record a video of it happening and then bring all that information to your doctor. With so much information the doctor has to be able to help and if he or she can not then "the force is weak with them" go to another more experienced doctor

    best of luck

Please have him have a sleep study!! Many people do have seizures in their sleep, and this can be slowly damaging to his brain. The sleep study will determine what is going on, and his medical insurance should pay for it.

My sister does something similar, she kicks, punches, thrashes in her sleeps basically. Falls under "parasomnia". Her boyfriends would complain she was basically beating them up in her sleep and she would wholeheartedly deny it. Until I corroborated it as true. I've heard a theory on a show on Discovery Health, where the Dr. said he thought this might happen due to undiagnosed sleep apnea. Lack of oxygen going to the brain... confusion ensues, and then the bizarre behaviors.
