    Heart rate not getting faster

My dad has been having some little pains in his heart area (from time to time). He had a stress test and several EKG's and EEG's. The doctor said that when he was running, his heart rate was NOT faster. They can't find anything wrong with his heart though and are saying it could be sleep apnea?
Does this sound odd to you?

I can't wait to hear why the 2 are related either. I would have thought the beating of his heart would have something to do with a blockage or something like that. It is interesting to think it might be from the way he sleeps.

I am not a doctor but I have a few thoughts about this. An EKG measures the electrical impulses to the heart. Our hearts have a nifty little thing called a synotrial node. The brain sends electrical impulses to this node to regulate the heart beat. Now if this node was damaged then you would get a pace maker to do the same thing. What I would like to know is what kind of sleep apnea they think it is. Central sleep apnea is a malfunction of the electrical impulses that are concerned with breathing so I am going to guess it is obstructive.

Now I could be wrong but this is my guess on the relationship between sleep apnea and bradychardia (slow heart rate) or lack of increase in heart rate. Have you ever gone up a mountain and you felt light headed? This is called Hypoxia. Hypoxia is your body's effort to maintain homeostasis in the blood supply. So while the pressure and content of oxygen may register as normal (or not depending how far gone you are) your body will attempt to keep the blood supply oxygenated and begin to deliver less oxygen to the tissues and organs in an attempt to conserve oxygen in the blood supply. Here is where my thinking gets iffy but perhaps with obstructive sleep apnea your body thinks it needs to conserve oxygen to maintain balance and inhibits the cardiac muscle to conserve oxygen. It should be exciting the cardiac muscle when running because you need MORE oxygen... so it is doing the opposite of what it should be doing. So why would the body think it needs to conserve oxygen when you have sleep apnea? I dunno but very interesting stuff.

That does seem strange. If you are right then maybe the body starts conserving oxygen because it thinks you will stop breathing. I have never heard this as being a symptom of sleep apnea before.
