I read the other day that in the USA, there are approximately 18 million people suffering from sleep apnea. The figure that 1 in 6 Americans have it. They also mentioned that there are a lot of undiagnosed cases like 1 in 50.
How common is sleep apnea? How many people in the US have it? What age group does it effect the most? I would love to know the statistics. Thanks.

It is believed that 4% of the men have it and 2% of the women have it. Among obese people 70% of them seems to have it and it is more prevalent among people over the age of 50. It worsens with people with heart problems and among those who have had a stroke at some time.
This is a surprisingly large number, I had not realised that this is so prevalent. Fat buildup and loss of muscle tone is also responsible for all of this. Snoring also seems to have some kind of connection with this. It can be very scary for the partners since they are always afraid that it may lead to deeper complications.
Ouch!... So many people suffer from it? This is really a surprising figure. I think Knightraider says correct that fatter body people tend to have such problem more.
