My dad has sleep Apnea. He snores really loud and then all sounds stop and he doesn't breath. He then gasps for air and it wakes him up. Now he is on a machine.
What are the sympstoms of Apnea? What caused it? Is it inherit from your parents? Is there any possible cause that specifically make a person having Apnea? I'm curious in how this sleep disorder affects someone life while they are not sleeping.

So you're saying that this sleep disorder cannot be cured ? I'm so sorry to hear that your dad is on a machine right now. It's a breathing machine right? What's the doctor say about it? How's the chance of him being better again?
There are 3 kinds of sleep apnea. He has Complex sleep apnea which means it is both obstruction and cause by a nervous system disorder. They did a procedure for the obstructive part but it didn't cure him. Yes, it is a breathing machine he uses at night.

Really sorry to hear that Ginger. I developed sleep apnea as an adult and as far as I can see, there are no side effects. I'm sure my husband feels differently listening to me breathe. He snores and has apnea; our children get it when they have bad colds. I guess we're used to it.
Obstructive sleep Apnea is the kind that you can cure. They can go in with a camera and find the obstruction and in most cases remove it. If you have more than one type then that might not cure it. Some people with only that kind are cured.
The causes of sleep apnea can be different depending on the type you have and your situation. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused because the muscles of the throat are relaxed at night. The muscle itself could cause it, you could have a mass, and being over weight can cause it.
