I do something that might sound strange but here goes. When I am ready to fall asleep I start my dream. Nothing to exciting and nothing that will keep me awake. Sometimes I will try to remember a dream I had in the past and start from there.
I like knowing that sleeping is a natural part of our daily rhythm – like breathing in and out. So setting the intention for a good night's rest and thinking about how good my body feels when I lay down set a positive tone for me. Over the years I have come to prefer this over fearing that I might not sleep well, as I have done in the past. This does involve practice and making the choice of where to place my mind.

I have to admit that I don't have too much problem falling asleep. What works for me is for me to start thinking about weird stuff. It is like telling myself a bedtime story. I make sure that I am not thinking about day to day stuff. It is a way of clearing my head before going to bed. I think in the present time, we have too much stress, too many preocupations.
The best thing to do to sleep quickly is to get yourself in a routine. For example every night before I go to bed I brush my teeth, wash my face, and few other things. Your body starts to know that when you do those things it is time for bed. Reading a book might help as well.
Just want to let Ginger know that I've been using and enjoying your "start your own dream" approach. I've really found that I've slept more deeply and with more satisfaction. Thanks a bunch for your terrific idea from 8/18/10!!
Avoid heavy dinner and wash your hands, face, legs properly before go to bed.Try it.
The best way is not a quick fix. You have to develop the proper "sleep routine" and train your body to sleep well. As kids we easily learnt but as adults we feel we can't anymore. For example: If at 9:00 p.m. every single night you switch off the television, brew a nice cup of tea (decaf of course), dim the lights and turn on some relaxing music, you wind down. Then take a warm shower, brush your teeth etc. get into bed and perhaps read a nice relaxing book. After a while, this becomes your "sleep routine" and more often than not your natural sleep will be enhanced and you will find yourself falling asleep easier and faster.
I listen to music at night right before I go to bed and that helps. I would also try taking a hot shower or bath. this helps you to relax, and gets you in the mind set of sleep. Stay away from tv, as it can just keep you awake and give you nightmares.
I like the idea of starting your dream. I think it is all about placing your mind into that zone of relaxation. Thinking (atarting to dream) about pleasant things can soothe you and get you to fall asleep faster. Nice one Ginger! Insomnia affects us all at some point and troubleshooting different potential solutions is a sure way to conquer it!
