I know my aunt stopped taking depression medication suddenly without decreasing the dosage, and she suffered from insomnia for a couple of weeks. It was horrible for her because it wasn't only the insomnia put other side effects as well.
I know that there are a lot of different things that can trigger insomnia. I have suffered from chronic insomnia since childhood. The doctors have run test after test yet they can not seem to narrow down a cause for my disorder. What are some of the things that trigger your insomnia?

Too much on my mind triggers my insomnia. I think all night long. If I can work myself hard enough during the day I'll usually go to sleep eventually. But let me have a problem that needs resolving, that's it for the night or nights.
I try to get the house done and the family in bed before I try to sleep. If I can be tired enough and not run into any stimuli; husband, children, remembering something that wasn't done or needs to be done; then I'll make it. Like Mariyah, if I remember something I need to do or solve; that's it. I have stayed awake for 38 hours.
One of the biggest things that keeps me from sleeping at night is playing computer games before I go to bed. I also discovered that my wheat allergy plays a large part in my insomnia. If I go off of wheat for awhile, I find that I can sleep at night without a problem.
I can sleep better if I get off of the computer at least two hours before I go to bed and do something relaxing that will help my mind to run down.
In my opinion, fears and anxiety can trigger insomnia. Kids who suffer from insomnia are afraid of something when they are going to sleep. I was afraid of the dark when I was a child and I find it hard to sleep at night.
As for adults, stress is the number one cause of insomnia.
I experienced some sleep disruption when I had (actually, I still have), a severe Calcium deficiency. It went undetected for months and months. I also still have a Vitamin D deficiency (these go hand in hand, along with Magnesium and Zinc). There were some nights that I just literally could not sleep. On one occasion, I had severe itching all over my body (which I think is to do with the liver my Doctor told me). Some nights, I still have a bit of a weird time in bed, but I can only recommend that you all eat as much good stuff as you can and stop smoking if you do... and stress VERY bad for your mind and body. If you're stressed out, you can forget getting a good night's rest. Your adrenaline sky rockets.
Sometimes I find that sleeping too much during the day will not allow me to sleep when I should be at night time. Usually, if I work myself until I am actually tired enough to sleep at night, then all is well. However, if I take lots of naps during the day then I am up all night. That seems to be a continual problem with me, but I am working on it.
For me it's either too much tv or computer or too much on my mind. Both of these can cripple any chances I have for a good nights sleep. I now turn my TV and computer off at least one hour before bed. I try and read afterwards as this seems to make me drowsy.
