I recently found an article on PubMed that explained in detail new findings about the exact nature of narcolepsy as a disorder. This describes it as a neurodegenerative disease, because neurons producing the hypocretin/orexin neuropeptide are lost over time.
Cell transplantation: a future therapy for narcole... [CNS Neurol Disord Drug Targets. 2009] - PubMed result
It states that experimental models have been generated to probe possible cures for narcolepsy in the future, by repairing or regenerating the neurons. What do you think about this research? Could it lead to a cure?
This is interesting. I personally have a friend who suffers from mild narcolepsy, so I'm hoping that this could help him, even if it's fair in the future. It's too bad there's no solid cures yet, since many people are at their wit's end with this syndrome. Repairing neurons would be a good solution to fix the long-term effects of narcolepsy.
