Now that you mention it, I realize that I don't really know how they always say that, but don't think anybody really know why. There must me a real explanation. Please share. I think they used to say that they could die of the scare.
Is that just an old wives tale about not waking a sleepwalker? What would be the reason that you would not wake them? What if they were going to get hurt?

I have read that you should awake sleepwalkers to prevent any accidents since they sleepwalk in the deepest part of sleep. They say it is a wife's tale the dying part.
Well sleepwalkers are in extreme danger of getting hurt when they sleepwalk. I think it would be the best thing to wake them and send them back to their beds. They could trip, fall, hurt themselves, anything could happen. I sure would hate to be on the wrong side of something I forgot to put away the night before, that's for sure. If you don't wake them and they hurt themselves, wouldn't you feel bad that you didn't stop it?
Doctors always recommend that you do not wake them, just gently try to get them back into bed. How that is possible to do without waking them up is beyond my comprehension. But it is said that if you wake them up it is traumatic for them
Its also an issue that if you wake people from sleep they might react unexpectedly. There have been cases where people have been woken up and been violent as their location etc confuses them. Hence why it is recommended that they are simply left alone or as suggested gently guided back to bed.
